Saturday Racing Tips – Trentham 29/03/25

The best of Saturday’s racing action from New Zealand comes from Trentham, where three superb graded races headline the card.

BEST BET – La Dorada

With three wins from four starts including a win in the Group 2 Matamata Breeders Stakes when last seen, La Dorada looks to be the horse to beat in the headline race of the day.

Having been rested for six weeks to ensure she is fresh for this assignment, if she runs to her best she will be tough to stop. 

THE DANGER – Landlock

A runner up at this level and at the Group 1 Sistema Stakes when last seen, Landlock looks a live danger. He has the experience at this level that very few in the field have and if the favourite fails to show up, he could well take advantage.

VALUE BET – War Princess

War Princess heads to Trentham looking to make it a perfect three from three but faces a huge jump in class here. Unexposed, if looking for value she could be the one to back.

BEST BET – Waitak
Having won the Group 2 Ultimate Mazda Japan Trophy last time out, Waitak will start the race as the one to beat. Doing his best work late in that victory, there are high hopes that the step up in trip should unlock even more.

THE DANGER – Whangaehu
Whangaehu could well vie for favouritism and it’s not a surprise given his Group 1 credentials. A runner up at that level and a winner of the Group 3 Trentham Stakes when last seen at the track, he should go close once again this time around.

VALUE BET – Midnight Blue
Whilst it’s hard to look past the top two in the market, a case could be made for Midnight Blue. Deemed good enough to compete in Group 1 races, he looks the best of the rest and could handle the conditions if the the top two fall apart.

BEST BET – Kiwi Skyhawk
Kiwi Skyhawk will start the Manawatu Classic as the favourite and its easy to see why following his fifth place finish in the NZ Derby. Looking for a first Group victory of his career, this could be the perfect opportunity to get off the mark.Insert content

THE DANGER – Coulthard
Coulthard is one of the least exposed horses in the field and will hope to make his first group appearance a winning one. Whilst this represents a big jump up in class, there will be hopes that a step up in trip could result in a career best performance.

VALUE BET - Shockabella
In a contest where there looks to be plenty of value, it could be worth siding with Shockabella. A winner last time out in Maiden company, she brings in good form. An outsider, she will look to make a mark at this level for the first time and could be capable of pulling off the upset.
